Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bar Exam?

While all states are somewhat different in their testing requirements, most require candidates to write essays on the day preceding the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) in state-specific subjects. Some states will test on general majority rule subjects. And, several states have now adopted the Multistate Essay Examination, a test also prepared by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). Finally, some jurisdictions, such as Texas and California, require a third day of testing. Most states will statistically correlate the Essay Day and the Multistate Day so each score is roughly 50% or the total score. Some states, such as Virginia, Texas, and Arizona, will weight the Multistate score slightly less than the Essay score. For specific information regarding your state, please call our offices.

  • Essay Day
The essay day normally precedes the MBE. It is generally given on a Tuesday. The number of essays and subjects tested vary by jurisdiction. In some states, such as Texas, the essay day follows the Multistate Day. And, in California, there are two essay days. A candidate will be tested on three essays in the morning of the day preceding the Multistate Examination Day and again on the morning after the Multistate Examination Day. Call our office to find out what specific testing procedures in your jurisdiction.
  • Multistate Bar Examination Day
This is a 200-question multiple choice exam given in 48 states on the same day, i.e., the last Wednesday in February and the last Wednesday in July. It is the most important part of the examination because most candidates will pass or fail their bar exam by a couple of points, even fractions of points! The subjects tested are Contracts/Sales - 34 questions, Torts - 34 questions, Real Property - 33 questions, Evidence - 33 questions, Constitutional Law - 33 questions and Criminal Law/Procedures - 33 questions. Two states do not use the examination: Louisiana and Washington. However, four U.S. territories require it, along with 4 states.

Why do students need to supplement with Reed Law Group?

  • Only Reed Law Group provides candidates with the issues tested most often. This is because our law professors take the Multistate Exam regularly! On recent exams, our candidates have enjoyed as much as a 43 point advantage over other candidates! Because most candidates pass or fail by only a couple of points on the Multistate, even fractions of points, Reed Law Group gives you the EDGE no other candidates enjoy!
  • Based on statistics released by the Bar Examiners, the mean score of a recent Multistate Exam was only 117 correct out of 200 points. This was the LOWEST MEAN RAW SCORE ever recorded on the MBE. Given most students were enrolled in one of the general bar review courses (such as BAR/BRI, Pieper) and, many supplemented their bar review with PMBR, the obvious question is: Do general bar review courses and PMBR adequately prepare your for the MBE? The obvious answer is: NO! [Fact is many bar reviews' lecturers have never taken the MBE or do not take the MBE regularly. And some courses even present lecturers who failed their first bar exam, e.g. PMBR!
  • Reed Law Group students achieve the HIGHEST Multistate scores across the country each year. If you score high, do you have to take the essay test?

  • In many jurisdictions, if you score high enough on the MBE, there is an AUTOMATIC ADMITTANCE and the essays are not even graded. E.g., In MICHIGAN there is an automatic admittance with a MBE score of 150 (a good faith effort on the essays is required).
