Medical and Psychological Assistance/Testing Accommodations
The following should assist you in seeking a board certified neuropsychologist in order to document a request for accommodations and/or seek a cognitive screening to help you identify any barriers to passing your exam. Generally speaking, board certified neuropsychologists nationwide can be found at www.theaacn.org. Psychologists listed below have been successful in attaining accommodations for past PassYourBar candidates.
It is important for all candidates to recognize that the results of an hour-long cursory interview with a healthcare professional -- and that professional's opinion stated in a letter -- is not usually sufficient to convince a state bar psychologist that he/she will be eligible for accommodations. In most states it appears that the bar exam applicant must have a "paper trail" of accommodations that he/she may have received in elementary school, junior high, high school, college and law school. For attention, memory, cognitive, and emotional issues, a full neuropsychological evaluation -- about 8-12 hours of the psychologist's time (of which the applicant is spending about 8-10 hours in testing) -- will be necessary to help the applicant secure such accommodations. More importantly, if the applicant has some diagnosable emotional, behavioral, cognitive, or psychophysiological disorder(s), the applicant should really postpone bar exam application and instead receive appropriate treatment while simultaneously studying for the bar. Six to twelve months of treatment for some applicants may result in a much better test outcome as well as significant changes in their lives so that they can function at a considerably higher level professionally and personally.
